What's your crochet skill level?

This page provides a description of skill levels and techniques used in our classes and patterns. There are many ways you could breakdown techniques into skill levels; note that the way I determine skill levels is different than most other websites, designers, etc.

First, we’ve listed common techniques and broken them down into three levels. Following that are the descriptions of skill levels, including which techniques are used/taught in our patterns and classes for each skill level.

Level 1 Techniques

• the chain stitch
• single crochet
• the slip stitch
• adding a new ball of yarn
• weaving in ends
• simple seaming (the whip stitch)
• fixing simple mistakes (frogging/ripping out)

Level 2 Techniques

• half double crochet
• double crochet
• triple crochet
• working in the round
• simple increasing (working two stitches into one)
• simple decreasing (skipping stitches)
• understanding the basics of gauge
• crocheting on edges
• crocheting through the front or back loops

Level 3 Techniques

• magic ring
• intermediate seaming
• single crochet seams
• slip stitch seams
• intermediate decreases
  • single crochet two together (sc2tog)
  • double crochet two together (dc2tog)
  • etc.
• combining stitches to make patterns
  • granny squares
  • mesh patterns
  • etc.
• using multiple techniques for shaping

Skill Levels

Absolute Beginner

Patterns: Only uses level 1 techniques.

Classes: No experience necessary. Level 1 techniques will be taught.

Advanced Beginner

Patterns: Uses level 1 techniques, plus one or two techniques from higher levels.

Classes: No experience necessary (some is okay and will help). Level 1 techniques will be taught, as well as one or two techniques from higher levels.

Intermediate

Patterns: Uses both level 1 and 2 techniques.

Classes: You should be comfortable with level 1 techniques before taking this class. Techniques from higher levels will be taught.

Almost Advanced

Patterns: Uses both level 1 and 2 techniques, plus one or two techniques from higher levels.

Classes: You should be comfortable with all level 1 and some level 2 techniques. Techniques from levels 2 and 3 will be taught.

Advanced

Patterns: Uses level 1, 2, and 3 techniques and beyond!

Classes: You should be comfortable with all level 1 and 2 techniques. Some experience with level 3 techniques will help but is not necessary. Techniques from level 3 and beyond will be taught.
