This class will guide you through each round of a granny square step by step, offering you tips for changing colors, keeping track of your spaces and stitches, and get you going on some of the most iconic and addictive crochet designs.
We encourage you to also sign up for our Floral Granny Squares session happening one week after, a perfect next steps class!

SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate/Almost Advanced. As long as you know everything listed in the required experience section below, you know enough to take this class!
You can read about how we determine skill levels here.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
To take this class you must already be quite comfortable with making a chain, single crocheting, and know how to do least one of the following stitches: half double crochet, double crochet, or triple/treble crochet.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this workshop you'll learn how two basic stitches (the chain and double crochet) combine to make a granny square. We'll be practicing with two or more colors to help distinguish each round of the square. You'll also learn how to follow both a written pattern and a crochet chart.
Depending on the timing of the workshop and each student's experience, we may also go over how to start a granny square with a magic ring, some tricks for having less tails to weave in, and a couple different seaming techniques for sewing the granny squares together.
REQUIRED TOOLS - available for purchase at the shop
Refer to the chart below to see which hook you should use for the weight of yarn you want to use.
REQUIRED YARN - available for purchase at the shop
You can use a variety of yarns to make granny squares. Come a bit early to class and we can help you pick out the right kind and amount for what you want to make!
Yarn Choice Tips: It's best to practice any new techniques with medium weight yarn or larger. If you are using more than one color in your granny squares, it's best to use the same weight of yarn for all colors. The amount of total needed yarn will vary based on how many granny squares you want to make and what you want to make them into. Below is a chart that tells you about how much yarn you need for one standard size granny square.
Yarn Weight | Yardage Needed | Suggested Hook Size | *Granny Square Width |
Worsted |
80 yards | US I / 5.5 mm | ~4" |
Aran | 70 yards | US J / 6 mm | ~4.5" |
Bulky | 60 yards | US L / 8 mm | ~5–6" |
Super Bulky | 50 yards | 12–20 mm | ~6–8" |
*The size of each granny square can be easily modified!

Scholarship Fund
Our Scholarship Fund is contributed to by the shop and our community to help those who need it attend our classes and events. You can read about why we started the fund here.
When signing up for a class or event, anyone is welcome to sign up for a Scholarship Fund ticket at a discount as funds allow. When a Scholarship Fund ticket is purchased, the amount discounted is taken from the Scholarship Fund to pay the shop and it's staff the regular ticket price.
If you are considering requesting a Scholarship Fund ticket but aren't sure whether it's for you or not, it probably is! The folks who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund wanted to contribute and want the funds to be used! And the lovely people putting on this class or event are still getting paid the full amount to do it. Please only pay full price if you feel you have enough to do so.
That said, we also ask that you be mindful of the amount and frequency of requests you make from the fund. Making sure funds are available to as many people as possible is a collaborative effort, so we'll check in with you and you check in with us!
If you'd like to use the Scholarship Fund, you can do so by calling the shop (929-529-7542), emailing us (hello@cleosyarnshop.com), or coming into the shop and requesting a Scholarship Ticket. We will ask you how much you are able to pay (zero is an acceptable answer!) and the funds available will cover the rest.
