Learn to Fix Mistakes in Knitting

If you've ever dropped a stitch while knitting I'm sure you know the terror of not knowing what to do to fix it. Signing up to learn how to fix your mistakes will give you the opportunity to face and learn from your fears! There a lot of handy little tricks and tools to try when something isn't quite looking right, and we can teach you some of the best and most versatile tricks.

Learning to fix mistakes is best done on independent swatches, therefore, please knit two 4-5” swatches prior to coming in to learn (or come early and knit in the shop!). You should knit one in stockinette stitch and one in garter stitch, leaving each on the needles–don’t bind off!

For general mistake fixing, we will cover identifying twisted stitches, un-knitting one stitch at a time, tinking, frogging (ripping out your stitches off the needle), using lifelines, and picking up dropped stitches in stockinette and garter stitch.

Sign Up: Learn these techniques in our Open Studio class! Open Studio is a drop-in workshop every Sunday from 3–5 PM. It's open to all crafts & experience levels, a time where you can learn anything you want, including fixing mistakes! Click here to sign up.

Required Experience: You must be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, and using knits and purls in the same row to benefit from this mistake solving program. If the swatch instructions written below seem easy to you, you have enough experience to come!

Required Yarn: 15–20 grams (30–50 yards) of worsted or bulky weight yarn. I recommend animal fiber yarns only (plant fibers & acrylics are less stretchy and cooperative) and avoid yarns that are fuzzy or dark colored as it will be hard to see your stitches.

Required Tools: Two sets of needles, matched to yarn gauge.  5–5.5 mm / US 8–9 needles for worsted weight yarn, 6–8 mm / US 10–11 needles for bulky weight yarn
