This fall we're all getting together in the shop to make some of the most classic knitwear patterns in history: cables!

Like our sweater workshop & knit-along that just wrapped up, this dual workshop & knit-along will have two parts: a workshop with focused instruction for those who want to learn how to knit cables and read chart patterns, and a knit-along craft circle for those who do not need instruction but want to come hang out for a couple hours each week to knit together.

KNIT-ALONG INFO

Knit-along attendees will receive guidance on selecting the right type and amount of materials for their chosen pattern whenever they start, and can ask questions about specific techniques during each session as long as Cleo isn't busy helping workshop students. Your fellow knit-along friends will also probably be able to help you out if you need it!

We have a few suggested patterns listed below but you can also find your own if you're looking for a specific project. This is a totally open-ended knit-along so you can make whatever you want, as long as it has some cables in it! We request that you purchase your materials from our shop, but it's not a requirement, just think of us the next time you're ready to buy yarn :)

You can come to all the sessions or just drop in for a couple of them. This is a great way to meet new crafty friends and have some dedicated time each week to work on your project. We'd love to have you!

WORKSHOP INFO

INSTRUCTOR
Cleo (they/she)

SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate
You can read about how we determine skill levels here.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
You must already be very comfortable with casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, working knit & purl stitches in the same row before taking this workshop. Knowing how to identify and fix mistakes is helpful to know but not required.

MATERIALS - available for purchase at the shop
The weight and amount of yarn needed will vary with your chosen pattern. We will be discussing picking your project and the correct yarn to buy in the first workshop session.

TOOLS - available for purchase at the shop
Needle sizes will vary with your chosen pattern! We can help you pick the best needles for your project in the first workshop session.

SCHEDULE
This workshop will be much less structured than other multi-week workshops, since everyone's cable projects will vary in complexity and techniques used. We are also spreading out the workshop sessions, so not all six sessions will have an instructor present. Instead, the first, third, and fifth sessions will be joint workshop & knit-along sessions, and the second, fourth, and sixth sessions will only be knit-along sessions. Workshop students are encouraged to attend the knit-along sessions to work on their projects and practice techniques between workshop sessions.

Each workshop session is open-ended and you can bring any cable project at any stage to any of the sessions! Each student will get time with the instructor to go over whatever they want to learn. If you missed the first couple of sessions and still want to learn cables, you can! Come to the last session and we'll get you started then :)

Pattern Yarn Weight  Notes
Cabled Scarf No. 1 by Cleo Malone Bulky

This is a super quick, fun, and easy cable project. Perfect for beginners, especially if you can only come to 1–2 of the workshop sessions.

Orla Vest by Kathleen Meehan
Worsted/
Aran

This is a fantastic beginner cable project, as there is only one kind of cable in the whole vest. Watch out though, Ravelry says the yarn used for this vest is a bulky, but we found it works up best with a worsted or aran weight yarn!

Cabled Hat No. 1 by Cleo Malone
Worsted/
Aran

A classic cabled beanie! You will learn how to knit both a regular cable and a mock cable while making this pattern. This is a great option for folks who want a smaller cabled project to start with.

Moby Sweater by PetiteKnits

This is a great pattern for those who are ready for a complex project to learn a lot from! Learn how to make both classic cables and how to use cable techniques to make a chevron pattern.
Gooseberry Shawl by Ksenia Naidyon Sport, DK, or Worsted This lovely little scarf uses cable techniques to create a geometric pattern, and has bobbles in it too! If you want a project to keep your focus this is the one for you.
Keito Dama Autumn 2024 #49 Worsted The super cute lilac vest with the bow pictured is Mei's recently finished piece that she made following a pattern in this Japanese pattern book! We only recommend this project to the most daring knitters.

We cannot offer refunds or store credit for any late cancellations. However, if the situation was out of your control and you want to come to another class instead, we can sign you up for a future class using our Scholarship Fund which is available to everyone!

Many of our classes have a minimum number of sign ups required to run. If a class doesn't get the required number of sign ups to run and we decide to cancel or post-pone the class we will notify those who did sign up via email between 24–48 hours before the class's start time and offer them a seat in the next class, a refund, or store credit.

Photography

When you attend a class at our shop you agree to be recorded and photographed during the class. If you would like to request that your face, hands, or body not be in any photos or videos that we share on social media please send an email requesting so any time prior to the start time of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com. You may still be recorded or photographed during the class but we will respect your request that the videos or images of you not be shared online.

Scholarship Fund

Our Scholarship Fund is contributed to by the shop and our community to help those who need it attend our classes and events. You can read about why we started the fund here.

When signing up for a class or event, anyone is welcome to sign up for a Scholarship Fund ticket at a discount as funds allow. When a Scholarship Fund ticket is purchased, the amount discounted is taken from the Scholarship Fund to pay the shop and it's staff the regular ticket price.

If you are considering requesting a Scholarship Fund ticket but aren't sure whether it's for you or not, it probably is! The folks who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund wanted to contribute and want the funds to be used! And the lovely people putting on this class or event are still getting paid the full amount to do it. Please only pay full price if you feel you have enough to do so.

That said, we also ask that you be mindful of the amount and frequency of requests you make from the fund. Making sure funds are available to as many people as possible is a collaborative effort, so we'll check in with you and you check in with us!

If you'd like to use the Scholarship Fund, you can do so by calling the shop (929-529-7542), emailing us (hello@cleosyarnshop.com), or coming into the shop and requesting a Scholarship Ticket. We will ask you how much you are able to pay (zero is an acceptable answer!) and the funds available will cover the rest.
