How to schedule workshop sessions

You will receive an email after checking out that will allow you to schedule your sessions. All sessions are held during Cleo's Office Hours.

After checking out, you will have 90 days to schedule all 12 of your hour-long sessions. We recommend that your first session be two hours long.

Please see the lesson plan in the description below for suggestions on when to schedule each session.

When can I schedule my sessions?

To browse our current availability before you book, go to our Cleo's Office Hours page and click "Choose a session."

Come back to this page to purchase all the sessions you need at a discount, though!

After you check out you will receive an email to schedule your class sessions. You must redeem sessions via that email to be signed up!

This workshop will guide you through every part of making a top-down raglan sweater step-by-step. We have several great pattern recommendations listed below. Students can also find their own patterns to follow, but for your first sweater we recommend they are crocheted top-down, use raglan increasing, and have a stitch gauge no smaller than 5.5 stitches per inch. Feel free to email us any patterns you're interested in and we can let you know if we think it's a good one to start with!

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE

We recommend that you are already very comfortable with the chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, and how to read your stitches to tell what you've done or where you are in a project before taking on a sweater, otherwise you may need extra classes to learn all the necessary techniques. Having some experience reading simple patterns is helpful but not required.

LESSON PLAN

Session 1 - 2 hours: Learn how to read a pattern, how to choose the right size, pick out the right yarn & hook for your size, make a gauge swatch, join to work in the round, crochet false ribbing (optional). Required homework before next session: finish neck hem.

Session 2 - 2 hours, scheduled 1–7 days after first session: Placing markers, starting raglan increasing, short row neck shaping (optional).

Session 3 - 1–2 hours, scheduled 1–7 days after second session: Continuing raglan increasing and short row shaping, troubleshooting, initial fit test, making yoke adjustments. Required homework before next session: finish yoke and be ready for separating for the sleeves.

Session 4 - 1–2 hours, scheduled 2–4 weeks after third session: Separating for sleeves, trying on to test fit, continue working on the body of sweater, optional waist shaping. Required homework before next session: finish body of sweater.

Session 5 - 1–2 hours, scheduled 1–14 days after fourth session: Crochet around sleeve openings, plan sleeve style, increasing or decreasing for sleeves (optional). Required homework before next session: finish at least one sleeve.

Session 6 - 1–2 hours, scheduled 1–2 weeks after fifth session: Final try on! Review of any techniques, weaving in ends, adding embellishments (optional), adding ribbing to hemlines (optional), blocking techniques

SUGGESTED MATERIALS

We typically help students choose the best yarn for their project in their first class session!

Each pattern below requires different weights of yarn and hook sizes. Follow each pattern link to see details, or let us show you our favorite options in the shop when you come in!

PATTERNS
listed in order of difficulty, starting with the easiest/quickest

Pattern Yarn Weight  Notes

Caveat Crop by Lydia Morrow
Aran
This is our top recommendation for this workshop! This pattern is worked with a faux ribbing on the neckline and cuffs that will only be visible from the right side of the work. The pattern has instructions for optional color blocking. It also has a seam running down the back that is not pictured.

Sigfrid Sweater by Justyna Srock
Worsted This pattern has both a free web version and an ad-free version that can be purchased on the website or through Ravelry. It is worked without ribbing and features a wide sleeve design, but if you'd like you can learn how to modify the pattern to have tapered sleeves in this workshop!
Top Down Crochet Pullover by Cleo Malone  DK

Designed by Cleo, this pattern is also made without ribbing and is on the lighter side. It can be made with or without the color blocking. We only recommend choosing this pattern if you're already comfortable working with smaller yarn and have lots of time to complete your homework between sessions!

Class Policies

Wait Lists

If a class is full we are happy to add you to the wait list in case someone cancels. Send an email with the name and date of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com to be added.

Cancellations

We are happy to offer you a refund or store credit for any class sign up as long as you give us notice at least 48 hours before the start time of the class.

We cannot offer refunds or store credit for any late cancellations. However, if the situation was out of your control and you want to come to another class instead, we can sign you up for a future class using our Scholarship Fund which is available to everyone!

Many of our classes have a minimum number of sign ups required to run. If a class doesn't get the required number of sign ups to run and we decide to cancel or post-pone the class we will notify those who did sign up via email between 24–48 hours before the class's start time and offer them a seat in the next class, a refund, or store credit.

Photography

When you attend a class at our shop you agree to be recorded and photographed during the class. If you would like to request that your face, hands, or body not be in any photos or videos that we share on social media please send an email requesting so any time prior to the start time of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com. You may still be recorded or photographed during the class but we will respect your request that the videos or images of you not be shared online.

Scholarship Fund

Our Scholarship Fund is contributed to by the shop and our community to help those who need it attend our classes and events. You can read about why we started the fund here.

When signing up for a class or event, anyone is welcome to sign up for a Scholarship Fund ticket at a discount as funds allow. When a Scholarship Fund ticket is purchased, the amount discounted is taken from the Scholarship Fund to pay the shop and it's staff the regular ticket price.

If you are considering requesting a Scholarship Fund ticket but aren't sure whether it's for you or not, it probably is! The folks who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund wanted to contribute and want the funds to be used! And the lovely people putting on this class or event are still getting paid the full amount to do it. Please only pay full price if you feel you have enough to do so.

That said, we also ask that you be mindful of the amount and frequency of requests you take from the fund. Making sure funds are available to as many people as possible is a collaborative effort, so we'll check in with you and you check in with us!

If you'd like to use the Scholarship Fund, you can do so by emailing us (hello@cleosyarnshop.com), or coming into the shop and requesting a Scholarship Ticket. We will ask you how much you are able to pay (zero is an acceptable answer!) and the funds available will cover the rest.
