How to schedule workshop sessions

You will receive an email after checking out that will allow you to schedule your sessions. All sessions are held during Cleo's Office Hours.

After checking out, you will have 60 days to schedule all 3 of your hour-long sessions. We recommend that your first session be two hours long.

Please see the lesson plan in the description below for suggestions on when to schedule each session.

When can I schedule my sessions?

To browse our current availability before you book, go to our Cleo's Office Hours page and click "Choose a session."

Come back to this page to purchase all the sessions you need at a discount, though!

After you check out you will receive an email to schedule your class sessions. You must redeem sessions via that email to be signed up!

Learn to crochet lace images and text in this intermediate workshop! Cleo will help you choose a pattern or design your own chart-pattern to crochet and teach you the (literal) building blocks of filet crochet designs.

Students can start with a larger yarn and beginner's sample chart to practice the technique or jump right in with lace weight yarns and an image of their choice. Cleo will also explain how to design a custom chart with the correct gauge, and teach you how to incorporate filet crochet designs into existing patterns for garments or home goods.

Feel free to email us any patterns you're interested in and we can let you know if we think it's a good one to start with!

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE

We recommend that you are already very comfortable with the chain stitch, half double crochet, double crochet, and how to read your stitches to tell what you've done or where you are in a project. Students without this experience are welcome to sign up, but they may need extra classes to learn all the necessary techniques.

LESSON PLAN

We recommend you sign up for 2 hours back to back for your first session, then use your remaining 1 hour for a follow-up session.

Session 1 - 2 hours: Learn how to read a filet crochet chart & make a practice swatch, or design your own image and start on it!

Session 2 - 1 hour: Troubleshooting, incorporating your design into an existing pattern, or finishing techniques.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS

YARN
Filet crochet is typically done with a laceweight cotton (like our favorites Cleá and Gima). But you can use any yarn to do filet crochet! We recommend starting on a worsted or DK weight yarn first if you're wary about this new technique or not used to working with lace weight yarn. Note that the larger the yarn is, the less detail your image can have.

The amount of yarn you need will vary depending on what you'd like to make. Our staff can help you estimate when you go in to purchase your materials, or Cleo can help you pick out something suitable at the start of your first session.

CROCHET HOOKS
If you are using crochet cotton or lace weight yarn, we recommend a hook size between 2–3.5 mm. The smaller the hook, the tighter your gauge will be, and the more contrast your image will have.

If you are using a larger yarn we recommend matching your hook size to what is recommended for that yarn. We can help you choose the correct hook size at the start of your first session.

Class Policies

Wait Lists

If a class is full we are happy to add you to the wait list in case someone cancels. Send an email with the name and date of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com to be added.

Cancellations

We are happy to offer you a refund or store credit for any class sign up as long as you give us notice at least 48 hours before the start time of the class.

We cannot offer refunds or store credit for any late cancellations. However, if the situation was out of your control and you want to come to another class instead, we can sign you up for a future class using our Scholarship Fund which is available to everyone!

Many of our classes have a minimum number of sign ups required to run. If a class doesn't get the required number of sign ups to run and we decide to cancel or post-pone the class we will notify those who did sign up via email between 24–48 hours before the class's start time and offer them a seat in the next class, a refund, or store credit.

Photography

When you attend a class at our shop you agree to be recorded and photographed during the class. If you would like to request that your face, hands, or body not be in any photos or videos that we share on social media please send an email requesting so any time prior to the start time of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com. You may still be recorded or photographed during the class but we will respect your request that the videos or images of you not be shared online.

Scholarship Fund

Our Scholarship Fund is contributed to by the shop and our community to help those who need it attend our classes and events. You can read about why we started the fund here.

When signing up for a class or event, anyone is welcome to sign up for a Scholarship Fund ticket at a discount as funds allow. When a Scholarship Fund ticket is purchased, the amount discounted is taken from the Scholarship Fund to pay the shop and it's staff the regular ticket price.

If you are considering requesting a Scholarship Fund ticket but aren't sure whether it's for you or not, it probably is! The folks who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund wanted to contribute and want the funds to be used! And the lovely people putting on this class or event are still getting paid the full amount to do it. Please only pay full price if you feel you have enough to do so.

That said, we also ask that you be mindful of the amount and frequency of requests you take from the fund. Making sure funds are available to as many people as possible is a collaborative effort, so we'll check in with you and you check in with us!

If you'd like to use the Scholarship Fund, you can do so by emailing us (hello@cleosyarnshop.com), or coming into the shop and requesting a Scholarship Ticket. We will ask you how much you are able to pay (zero is an acceptable answer!) and the funds available will cover the rest.
