Learn to knit in this fun & comprehensive class for beginners. In this class you can get started on making an easy scarf, hat, or bag. In class we’ll go over how to cast on, or start your knitting, and the knit stitch. We'll also give demos on binding off, seaming, and weaving in your ends.
We have many different yarns that are great for beginners. Come a bit early to class to get our advice on which ones are easy to use and how much you’ll need for your project!

SKILL LEVEL
Absolute Beginner or Advanced Beginner. Each student will learn the same basic techniques, then gets to choose how much more they want to learn. You can read about how we determine skill levels here.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
The long tail cast on, the knit stitch, binding off, seaming, and weaving in ends. Optional: simple decreasing/knit two together (k2tog).
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
None! You don't need any knitting experience to take this class. Must be 9 years or older.
REQUIRED YARN - available for purchase at the shop
You can knit a scarf in any worsted, bulky, or super bulky weight yarn. The amount you will need will vary depending on the yarn weight you choose and the size you want your scarf to be (we can give you estimates in the shop).
If you want to make a hat you’ll need at least 200 yards of worsted weight yarn.
To make this bag you'll need 320 yards of bulky weight yarn.
REQUIRED TOOLS - available for purchase at the shop
If you’re making a scarf, the needle size will vary based on the yarn you choose: anything between US 8 (5 mm) and US 19 (15 mm). If you’re making a hat you’ll need US 8 (5 mm) needles. This bag pattern uses US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles.
We recommend using wooden needles when you’re learning, the metal ones can be heavy (if they’re vintage) and too slippery, and plastic ones can be too sticky.
SLIDING SCALE
This class is offered on a sliding scale. Determining monetary value under capitalism while being anti-capitalist is complicated! You can refer to the chart below that offers suggestions for each income bracket, but please pay whatever amount feels right to you. I want as many people to have access to the knowledge I'm sharing as possible!
Income | If you're buying the yarn for the class CLEO'S | If you're bringing your own yarn to class |
