Are you ready to dive into weaving head first? Maybe you've tried a bit of weaving in the past but now you're ready to learn all the ins and outs of the craft. You could also be an absolute beginner with a big appetite. For anyone who is looking to learn the basics and beyond, this is the workshop for you!
In this comprehensive workshop you'll learn how to plan out different projects depending on desired size, color patterns, stitches, and fabric. You can make multiple smaller projects or work on one larger or more complex project throughout the workshop.
You have the option of buying a new loom to use during class, or renting one of our classroom looms for 2–4 weeks. You also have the option of taking the loom home with you to work on your projects between each session (recommended), or leaving it at the shop and only working on your project during class.
SUGGESTED PROJECTS
Scarves, shawls, table runners, tapestries, placemats, coasters, napkins, or dish towels.
Students can play with color (mixing colors, stripes, plaid patterns, color blocks, etc), texture (using different yarn weights, adding fringe, tassels, loops, knots, lace, etc), or tapestry techniques (weft faced color patterns, creating images).
RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE
You don't need any prior experience to take this class! Students must be at least 9 years old.
LESSON PLAN
Session 1 (2 hours): students will learn the direct warping method with one or two colors, how to wind a shuttle, the basic weaving stitch pattern (plain weave), how to troubleshoot tension issues, how to change colors, and how to hemstitch. Optional homework to do at home: practice weaving!
Session 2 (2 hours, scheduled 1–7 days after first session): Students will learn either how to finish their first project and start another one, or learn further weaving techniques on their current warp. This can include weft facing patterns or tapestry weaving, lace weaving, pick up patterns, or color patterns like plaid & houndstooth.
Remaining sessions can be scheduled together or split up, depending on the project type chosen and each student's individual needs & progress.
SUGGESTED MATERIALS
YARN - available for purchase at the shop
We typically help students choose the best yarn for their project in their first class session!
If you are bringing yarn from home, please wind it into a cake or ball before class!
If you would like to bring yarn from home, we recommend bringing sport, DK, or worsted weight yarn. You'll need at least 140 yards of strong yarn (won't easily break when pulled) wound in a single ball with no knots for the warp, and 120 yards of any strength yarn for the weft (can be multiple smaller balls).
LOOM & TOOLS - available for rent or purchase at the shop
A 10–20" rigid heddle table loom with any reed 12 ends per inch or larger, 1–2 stick shuttles, 3 clamps, a warping peg, a threading hook, 2 rubber bands, a 10–15" roll of thick paper, 10 12" x 1" strips of fabric, scissors, and a darning needle.
Each student can rent one of our classroom loom kits that come with all of the above tools, or bring or purchase their own loom and tools to use in class.
Note: because this class involves us preparing a loom for you to use, even if it says there are seats still available for the session you are interested in attending, you must sign up for this workshop at least 24 hours in advance.

Class Policies
Cancellations
We are happy to offer you a refund or store credit for any event sign up as long as you give us notice at least 48 hours before the start time of the first session.
In order to pay our hosts & teachers for their time & effort, we cannot offer refunds or store credit for any late cancellations. However, if the situation was out of your control and you want to come to another class instead, we can sign you up for a future class using our Scholarship Fund which is available to everyone (read more about our Scholarship Fund below).
Many of our classes have a minimum number of sign ups required to run. If a class doesn't get the required number of sign ups to run and we decide to cancel or post-pone the class we will notify those who did sign up via email between 24–48 hours before the class's start time and offer them a seat in the next class, a refund, or store credit.
Photography
When you attend any event at our shop you agree to be recorded and photographed during the class. If you would like to request that your face, hands, or body not be in any photos or videos that we share on social media please send an email requesting so any time prior to the start time of the class to hello@cleosyarnshop.com. You may still be recorded or photographed during the class but we will respect your request that the videos or images of you not be shared online.
Scholarship Fund
Our Scholarship Fund is contributed to by the shop and our community to help those who need it attend our classes and events. You can read about why we started the fund here.
When signing up for a class or event, anyone is welcome to sign up for a Scholarship Fund ticket at a discount as funds allow. When a Scholarship Fund ticket is purchased, the amount discounted is taken from the Scholarship Fund to pay for the shop's daily operating costs and our staff for their time & effort put into the event.
If you are considering requesting a Scholarship Fund ticket but aren't sure whether it's for you or not, it probably is! The folks who have contributed to the Scholarship Fund wanted to contribute and want the funds to be used! And the lovely people putting on this class or event are still getting paid the full amount to do it. Please only pay full price if you feel you have enough to do so.
That said, we also ask that you be mindful of the amount and frequency of requests you take from the fund. Making sure funds are available to as many people as possible is a collaborative effort, so we'll check in with you and you check in with us!
If you'd like to use the Scholarship Fund, you can do so by emailing us (hello@cleosyarnshop.com). We will ask you how much you are able to pay (zero is an acceptable answer!) and the funds available will cover the rest.
